Students to get makeover
PRESQUE ISLE — Northern Maine Community College students preparing to enter the workforce after graduation have the opportunity to enhance their classroom and learning experience with a special day of events designed to help them stand out and make an outstanding first impression with prospective employers.
Senior Makeover Day, held every other year, is open to any student looking to get a professional makeover in anticipation of landing a job. The event serves as the first of three events on campus geared toward career readiness.
Stylists from The Total Look and Oasis Salons are donating their services to offer students free haircuts and styles. Attendees can also get makeup tips, professional clothing fittings and even sign up for gift card giveaways. The event will take place Thursday, March 3 in the Edmunds Conference Center at NMCC from noon-3 p.m.
“The goal of the event is to help students make a great first impression,” said Shelli Cronkhite, counselor in the NMCC student support services office and coordinator of the makeover event. “It’s a pick-me-up for students. They’re able to get a fresh new look while receiving advice to help transition from student to working professional.”
The non-profit Northeast Society for Human Resource Management (NESHRM) has donated $250 in gift cards that will be given away to students in order for them to purchase professional attire. Faculty, staff, and community members have also donated a collection of gently used professional clothing for students to take with them to utilize for future interviews.
“This event is possible — in large part — because of the local professionals who are willing to volunteer their services for our students,” said Cronkhite.
Along with their new look, students can also take advantage of interview tips and techniques, as well as reviews of their resumes from area human resource professionals who have volunteered to offer advice to help take that next big leap into the workforce.
In addition to the traditional Senior Makeover Day activities, organizers have enhanced the event this year to include an evening etiquette dinner. Hosted and sponsored by Aramark, NMCC’s food service provider, the “how to” meal will begin with a social, 5 p.m,. Reed Dining Commons.
“The dinner will feature a four-course meal and presentation called ‘Mastering the Meal Interview,’” said food services director Rob Ottaviano. “An event like this is important because it’s becoming more common practice to hold an interview in a social environment. This dinner will help prepare these students for a variety of dining situations they might encounter while on an interview such as table manners, what types of food to order, and how much food is appropriate.”
The makeover day and etiquette dinner are being held one week prior to the Job Fair taking place at NMCC March 10 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the gymnasium. The event, the largest job fair in Aroostook County, will feature a variety of over 50 area businesses seeking potential future employees.
