HOULTON — Scouts in Troop 155 of Houlton will hold a Spring Carnival at the Houlton Recreation Center on Friday, May 13 from 6-8 p.m. as a fundraiser for the Alex’s Lemonade State Foundation. There is no cost of admission, but donations will be accepted.
According to Cubmaster Melony Lowrey, the Scouts wanted to do something different this year to raise money for children’s cancer research.
“We did a lemonade stand last year,” Lowrey said. “This is the general time when we do our spring recruitment for Cub Scouts, so instead of going into the schools to recruit like we have done in year’s past, we thought it would be a good idea to combine our fundraiser and our recruitment drive. This way we can show some of the fun things that Scouts do in the community.”
A variety of children’s games, suitable for those up to fifth grade, will be available at the carnival. A bottle drive will also be held and concessions sold with all of the proceeds benefiting Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). It has been 11 years since 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fund-raising movement, complete with thousands of volunteers across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $30 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 125 research projects nationally.
About 26 children are involved in the Cub Scout Pack 155. An additional eight Scouts participate in the newly formed Boy Scout troop.
“We just started the Boy Scout troop this spring,” she said. “We have kids from Littleton all the way down to Amity. We have the whole area covered.”
