Town Manager addresses Kiwanis
EASTON NEWS
by Debbie Smith
The Easton Kiwanis Club met June 7 for their regular meeting with Town Manager Jim Gardner as guest speaker. A supper of “make your own sandwiches” was enjoyed by all present.
The meeting was opened by President Mike Allen with the salute to the flag and prayer, given by Richard Kneeland. After supper Mr. Gardner spoke to the group on his background, stating that he felt like he had returned home when he came to Easton to work because he grew up around loved ones in this town. His grandparents were Ken and Bea Hayden, who had a family of 14 kids. His mother is Myrna Hayden Gardner and he is proud of them all. He and his wife of 35 years and their dog have recently moved into their newly purchased home on the Mahaney Road. They also have two grandsons and a granddaughter.
Mr. Gardner said he has a vision for Easton as he feels that the town is full of resources. He would like to see the Prestile Stream Park rejuvenated and after visiting the Francis Malcolm Science Center, he thinks that he might help them acquire a grant. He explained that he had been quite successful in acquiring grants in other towns, Washburn and Ashland, where he was their former town manager before coming to Easton.
He also told the group that there would be a new business coming to Easton soon. He said that he had ordered banners to welcome visitors to Easton and that he is learning to work with the Amish community. He also said he was very impressed with the compatibility of the Town Council and the School Board and felt that they were “all about community.” He once more stated that the doors of the Town Office are always open.
After Mr. Gardner finished speaking, President Allen opened the meeting by thanking Mr. Gardner for his time and information. The slate of officers was brought to the floor for a vote. They are: President, Barbara Blackstone; Vice President, Jessica Blackstone; Secretary, Mike Allen; Treasurer, Herbert Demerchant; and chairman of the board, Mike Cyr. The members of the Board under Cyr are: Harold Clark, Loris Allen, and Keith and Esther Richardson. The slate of officers were voted in.
The Treasurer reported that she had purchased two large coolers, two pop-up canopies, a grill and other items to be used in their fundraising. The posters for the Calendar Contest were shown and will be posted around town to be seen by the public. This contest is about selecting a picture to be put on the new Kiwanis Calendar. People are asked to bring pictures that pertain to Easton to the Town Office and it will be voted on by the public on July 9th at the beginning of the Easton’s Field Days. Attach a card with your name and address to your picture please. The sale of Calendars will begin the day after the Presque Isle Fair. There may be a sign-up sheet at the store.
Jessica Blackstone presented a check to the President for the start up cost of the new “Little Hands on the Farm” exhibit that will be set up at the Northern Maine Fair this year. Donations are welcomed.
The fund-raising projects for the Easton Kiwanis this year began with a cookout for the Pine and Spurs Riding Club Horse Show on June 19th at Maple Grove and on July 8th the Chicken Barbecue to start off the Easton Fields Days events. The rest of July and into August will also be busy with cookouts for up-coming events.
Those present at the meeting were: Mike and Loris Allen, Bernie Hussey, Richard and Jeannie Kneeland, Irene DaFonte, Keith and Esther Richardson, Eldora and Clair Carter, Jessica Blackstone, Mike Cyr, Vaughn Martin, Jeremy Corey and Barb Blackstone.
