PIHS golfers start season with a big win
The Presque Isle Wildcats got their golf season under way recently, with the first regular season match last Tuesday proving to be a convincing 60-stroke victory over the Fort Kent Warriors at Presque Isle Country Club.
The hosts finished with 171 strokes, with Gabe Player leading the way with a 41 on the afternoon to capture medalist honors. Evan Waddell and Adam Flynn both came in with 42s, while Connor Shaw and Liam Hughes each carded 46s.
Alex Chasse fired a 42 to lead Fort Kent, which compiled 231 strokes as a team in the match.
PI also competed in a pair of exhibition matches the previous week. Shaw had a 43 and Matt Sullivan a 44 in the Wildcats’ 13-stroke win (186-199) over Central Aroostook at Mars Hill Country Club Aug. 22. Dan Brewer shot a 42 and Alex Folsom a 47 for the Panthers.
In another non-countable match held at JaTo Highlands in Lincoln Aug. 25, PI downed Mattanawcook by 25 strokes (163-188).
Waddell shot a 2-under-par 34 in an impressive performance. Flynn followed with a 40, with Shaw shooting a 44 and Cody Merrill and Player each with 45s.
Last Wednesday, the Ashland Hornets made the trip to Houlton Community Golf Club to take on Hodgdon. Ashland came away with the win with 191 strokes, compared to 213 for the host Hawks.
Mark Corella of the Hornets was on his game as he was the medalist with a score of 37. Teammates Dylan Cyr-Cormier and Brandon Condon backed Corella up with scores of 47 and 48, respectively. Marc Chasse was the Hornets other scorer with a 59.
Chris Wallace posted a round of 39 for Hodgdon.
On Friday, MHCC was the site of a regular season match between the Hornets and the Panthers. CA prevailed with 191 strokes as the Panthers’ four scorers came in with 50s or better. Folsom had a 43, Chandler Brewer and Brewer both had 49s and Mike McClung posted a 50. Ashland’s Corella was the medalist with a 39 and Cormier-Cyr had a solid effort with a 43. Chasse (62) and Amos Ward (76) were the Hornets’ other competitors.
A three-team match was held at MHCC two days earlier. Fort Fairfield won it with a 204, followed by Central Aroostook with 208 strokes and Limestone-MSSM with 245.
Landon Towle of the victorious Tigers was the medalist with a 46. Teammates Robbie Watson and Billy Weissman both scored 48s.
Dan Brewer had a 49 to lead CA, with Zach Grass carding a 50 and Chandler Brewer a 53.
Limestone-MSSM was paced by Megan Flanigan, who had a 49. Tyler Morgan posted a 51 in the match.
