HOUGHTON, Antoria R. “Tory”, 86, FORT FAIRFIELD, at Presque Isle, January 15, 2012. In keeping with Tory’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or service at this time, however a celebration of her life will be conducted at a later date at Fort Fairfield. FORT FAIRFIELD – Antoria R. “Tory” Houghton, 96, wife of the late Thomas E. Houghton Jr., passed away Sunday morning, January 15, 2012, at a Presque Isle nursing facility, after a lengthy illness. She was born March 28, 1915, in New Sweden, the daughter of Emil and Emelia (Sealander) Rosen.
A graduate of the Caribou High School and the Aroostook State Normal School, Tory taught school for one year before attending the University of Maine where she received a B.S. degree in Home Economics in 1939.
On June 10, 1939, she married Thomas E. Houghton Jr. In addition to raising a family, she was a very supportive wife, assisting her husband in the family’s potato growing business. This included providing meals and lodging to many truck drivers and business associates.
Tory was a member of the United Parish Church, Fort Fairfield, the Fort Fairfield Philomathian Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the 20-30 Club of the United Parish Church. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed gardening. Tory will be remembered for her great love for her family, her thoughtfulness, care and concern for others, her gracious and generous hospitality, and her sensitivity to the feelings of others. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her greatest joy was receiving visits from her children and grandchildren and making treats for those grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of sixty-four years, Thomas E. Houghton Jr. on February 18, 2004; two sisters, Doris McCready and Warrena Richard; one granddaughter, Amy Winston.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Greene and her husband George of Wiscasset, and Bonnie Winston of Brisbane, Australia; two sons, Thomas “Tim” Houghton III of Fort Fairfield, and Wesley Chapel, Florida, and John Houghton and his wife, Margaret of Fort Fairfield; one sister-in-law, Frances Whited of Caribou; five grandchildren, Susan Greene of Richmond, Bruce Houghton of Portland, Timberly Sweeney and her husband, Sean of Tewksbury, MA, Thomas Houghton IV and his wife, Jenny of Lehigh Acres, Florida, and Ryan Houghton of Portland; three step-grandchildren, Sara Khan and her husband, Shaun of Swampscott, MA, Matthew Cyr and his wife, Kelly of New Gloucester, and Emily Holder and her husband, Craig of Mapleton; five great-grandchildren, Antoria and Timothy Sweeney, Grace Greene, Thomas Houghton V and Evan Houghton; five step-great-grandchildren, Ava, Nolan and Caleb Holder, Reece Cyr and Maliq Khan; several nieces and nephews; and a very special cousin, Shirley Griffeth of Caribou.
Tory’s family would like to thank the Presque Isle Nursing Home for the wonderful care she received and a special thank you to the staff of PEC Unit for their many years of love and care.
In keeping with Tory’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or service at this time, however a celebration of Tory’s life will be conducted at a later date at the Fort Fairfield United Parish Church, followed by interment at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield, to be announced in a later edition of the Bangor Daily News. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Mrs. Houghton in a special way may contribute in her memory to the United Parish Church Memorial Fund, c/o Betty Kent-Conant, 18 Harding Avenue, Fort Fairfield, 04742. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield.
