Goheen scored the first run of the game in the second inning, having stole second and third base after a leadoff single. Zack Fletcher picked up the RBI, then came in to score to give Doyen’s the 2-0 lead on an Anna Trombley RBI groundout to Buck Contruction first baseman Ian Michaud.
The Doyen bats were still hot the next two innings, pushing four runs across in both the third and fourth innings. Connor DeMerchant and Jonah Hudson came around to score in both frames, while Torey Levesque, Winger, Goheen and Justin Edwards-Robidou also crossed the plate.
Patenaude was able to put Buck Construction on the board in the top of the fourth, scoring on an Adam Paterson groundout to Doyen third baseman DeMerchant. Sjoberg scored the other Buck Construction run in the fifth, starting a rally with a one-out single. Sjoberg came in as Taylor Ellis drew a bases-loaded walk. The defensive play of the game followed, as Hudson was able to smother a comebacker off the bat of Patenaude. Hudson composed himself and made a solid throw to first base to squash the Buck Construction momentum.
Doyen Farms tacked on five more runs in the fifth inning to ensure its first league title, with Jessica Boucher, Edwards-Robidou, Levesque, DeMerchant, and Hudson all crossing the plate.
Doyen Farms downed a pesky, short staffed Buck Farms team in the first semifinal of the Mapleton Little League playoffs July 23.
The game was scoreless before Doyen’s finally broke through in the bottom of the third. Edwards-Robidou drew a one-out walk, then raced around to score after Levesque blasted a triple to the gap. Levesque came in after DeMerchant smoked a single through the infield and Jonah Hudson followed with a single of his own. Both DeMerchant and Hudson came around to score on Winger’s towering home run deep over the centerfield fence.
Jessica Boucher and Hudson added insurance runs for Doyen’s late to ensure the 7-0 win. Zack Fletcher also hit well for Doyen Farms, finishing with two hits. Erick Tompkins reached base twice for Buck Farms, walking once and smoking a double in the sixth inning.
Buck Construction jumped out to the early lead the next evening against Fox Family Chips in the other semifinal matchup.
Patenaude led off the first with a single, followed by a Cole Paterson walk. They were both plated courtesy of a booming double by Adam Paterson. Buck Construction took a 3-0 lead after the third inning, as Michaud’s double plated Kinney.
Fox Family came storming back in the fourth inning. RJ Gross started the inning with a single, then stole first and second. TJ Lovely reached on an error, and both came around to score on a base knock by Gavin Akeley, who later came across.
Fox Family fought back to take the 4-3 lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Gross.
The lead was short lived, as Buck Construction came roaring back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Kinney drove in one run and Jacob Sjoberg drove home the go-ahead tally with an infield hit. Fox Family couldn’t stage another comeback, as Buck Construction held on for the 6-4 win.
