    Smyrna Mills — Harry Fisher is building a fine new residence on High St. The heating and plumbing is in charge of S.A. Fairbanks.
    Child play — The young son of Mr. and Mrs. G.R. Ervin, while playing with some other Highlands neighborhood children, was accidentally shot in the shoulder by a .22 caliber rifle. Fortunately no serious results are anticipated.
    Houlton boy honored — Representative Guernsey announced the selection of Edmund James Kidder of Houlton as his nomination for principal to a cadetship at the Annapolis Naval Academy.

    Barracks to be erected — Captain Wilbur A. Towle of the State Highway Police was in Houlton Saturday conferring with the Board of Selectmen relative to the Fifth District State Police Barracks which will be erected on the former town farm property at a projected cost of $9,000.
    Dean of Women — Jean Watson, a member of the Ricker Classical Institute faculty has just been appointed Dean of Women.

BS-FromFiles-dc-pt-33First airship flight — The management of the Houlton Agricultural Society are to be congratulated upon the progressive manner in which they are securing features for their first annual Fair to be held Aug. 27-29. Attracting the most interest is the news that Prof. Terrill, the celebrated aviation enthusiast, will make two flights daily during the fair. The machine used by Mr. Terrill is a Curtis Biplane of the latest model, propelled by a 75 horsepower engine.

    Tribute to pea packer — Linwood L. Ross penned a special song to the tune of “Marching Through Georgia” on the occasion of a Houlton Rotary Club reception for officials with the Snider Packing Company, who recently opened a factory in town. “Farmers in this neck of the woods, at last, raise something new, Oh no! they’re not potatoes, but much easier to chew, Pea greenish in complexion, instead of black and blue, Legumes will grow in old Aroostook.”

    New convalescent home planned — Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Folsom, owners of Folsom’s Convalescent Home on Leonard Street have announced plans to build a new building in back of the present one on Holland Street. Quenton Haney has been contracted for the construction.
    Sherman Mills — Superintendent of Schools Ronald E. Susee has announced the staff appointments at the Sherman High School. They include A. Harold Fenlason, principal and teacher of math and science; Edward Tolman, French and social studies; Mrs. Mary Robertson, English; Richard Barstow, English; Ronald Marks, physical education; Daniel Sanford, commercial subjects; and Albert Campbell, agricultural vocations.
    Business spotlight — Since 1955, Ray Cunliffe and his able assistant Fred Ward have been selling Homelite chain saws and repairing/sharpening makes and models of all types.

    Outstanding — Tracy Mitchell and P.J. Cain were recognized as the Outstanding Boy and Girl Athletes at the Hodgdon Recreation Program, according to Rec Director Rick Cortis.
    Guy repeats — Tim Guy is the Houlton Community Golf Club men’s champion for the second time in a row as he defeated Jerry Adams in a sudden death playoff by carding a birdie on No. 2.
