LIMESTONE – While the rest of New England braced for a record-setting blizzard on Feb. 16, skiers at the annual C-ME Ski in Limestone braced for 14 kilometers of cross-country skiing through fresh falling snow and stiff winds. Those that made the slow trip to the Aroostook Wildlife Refuge were rewarded with a well-groomed course and beautiful skiing.
The citizen’s ski event celebrated its 25th anniversary over the weekend thanks to the efforts of the Limestone Ski Club and the Friends of the Aroostook Wildlife Refuge. The C-ME Ski marked the third stop on the Aroostook Cup tour, and with 41 participants, it proved a successful day for all involved.
In the 7K junior race, John O’Meara and Kendra Furber, both of Stockholm, won the boys’ and girls’ field respectively.
In the 14K female event, Emily Ramsey of Snowy Mountain Trails in Stockholm took the win in 1:00:18. Sarah Doak of Caribou’s Northern Skiers Club took second (1:05:24) and Patricia Hebert of the 10th Mountain Ski Club captured third place (1:06:24).
On the men’s side, the winner was the Northern Skiers’ Welly Ramsey in 47:03. Lance McKenney of Presque Isle’s Nordic Heritage Sport Club skied to second place (51:46), while third place went to Mike Smith, also of NHSC (52:08).
Maine Winter Sports Center officials were thankful for the staff and volunteers at the Aroostook Wildlife Refuge, as well as the Limestone Ski Club, and all of the weekend’s participants for a fantastic 25 years at the C-ME Ski. Skiers are encouraged to visit and enjoy the trails at the refuge anytime, as they are free and open to the public.
