HOULTON, Maine — Angie Wotton, district manager of the Southern Aroostook Soil and Water Conservation District has been awarded Maine’s Golden Apple Award.

The Golden Apple award was created to recognize individuals dedicated to the intellectual and emotional growth of Maine’s children and young adults. Wotton was nominated for this award by Debbie Melvin in the Houlton School system, who was invited to join her in Portland Aug. 15 to receive the award.

Unfortunately, the awards ceremony was canceled, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wotton has worked with the local schools for many years to increase Maine youths exposure to agriculture and where their food comes from. Most recently she applied for, and received, a Farm to School grant that purchased a Charlie Cart (mobile kitchen cart) for the schools.

Angie used this unit to teach children how to make healthy food out of local ingredients. Since the
COVID pandemic, Angie has switched gears and is delivering this information to school children through her YouTube “Snack bites” video series.
