75 Years Ago-February 3, 1949

Fishman Store Managers Change – Philip Herf, who has been manager of the M. H. Fishman’s store here for the past 10 years, received notification from the company headquarters in New York last week that he has been transferred to the management of the chain’s store in Rutland VT. The new manager of the Fishman store will be L. D. Duquette comes to Houlton after several years of service with the company, the most recent of which has been as temporary assistant manager of the unit in Newburgh, N.Y. 

Elks Women Divide In Matches With Caribou – The first team of the ELks women bowlers lost by the narrow margin of five pins in total pinfall in a match against the Abnaki club here last night while the second team was victorious by 173 pins.

50 Years Ago-February 27, 1974

Rhoda Enters Race For County Office – Cecilia Beaulieu Rhoda of Houlton has announced that she will be a candidate in the Republican primary for the position of Register of Probate for Aroostook County. A native of Madawaska, Mrs. Rhoda was educated in the Madawaska public schools, and graduated from Marymount Secondary School in St. Foy, Quebec. She attended College Maillet in St. Basile, N.B. and had graduated from St. Joseph’s College in Standish. 

Miss Daggett Is In Florida As Navy Trainee – Patricia Daggett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Daggett of Sherman Station has enlisted in the U. S. Navy and has gone to Orlando, Fla., where she will undergo nine weeks of training. Miss Daggett, is a 1973 graduate of  Katahdin High School. 

25 Years Ago-February 10, 1999

Players of the Week’ honored – Chosen as this week’s female player of the week is Houlton’s Kelly Socoby and co-male players of the week are Houlton’s Willie Sleeper and Southern Aroostook Sam Michaud. Socoby earned the honor with her play against Hodgdon and Caribou. She scored 22 points against Hodgdon and tallied another 17 in the Caribou game. Michaud, who scored his 1,000 points in high school basketball career last Tuesday night against Limestone. He finished with 13 points in the game. Sleeper, who is a two-time honoree, played outstanding against Madawaska, drilling six, 3- pointers and ending the game with 22 points. 

Green was named by council to the SAD 29 board – A Houlton man who unsuccessfully ran for the SAD 29 school last fall now has a spot on the board of directors. David Green was approved by the Houlton Town Council Monday night to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Elizabeth Childers.
