Revisiting Houlton’s cameras

To the editor:

Regarding last week’s article on security surveillance cameras in Houlton, I’d like, if I may, to round out my printed comments. Don’t get me wrong, I do appreciate many aspects of the federal government and I do understand the need for security. We do want security but at what cost?

My real concern is that digital face recognition is a very slippery slope, as seen in China: This is a lot of power in a few hands, and can lead over time to a form of “digital citizenship” where your face is linked to a “social credit score”. Individuals accumulate points based on their behavior, with potential consequences like restricted travel or access to services if their score falls below a certain threshold.

Instead, let’s fight crime with education, jobs, and an enriched cultural environment.

Many thanks for the conversation.
