Butt horns with the Bangor High School Rams and laws of physics tells you the outcome. The Northern Maine Moose boys lacrosse team had a 9-6 comeback win over the Rams on the road on May 27.
There was a slow start for both teams in the first period and only a 1-goal difference at the half as the Rams had the lead.
“Just like our last game the boys dug deep and started spreading the offensive opportunities out,” head coach Adam Simoes said.
“Isaiah Ervin laced two laser shots to the corners of the net and followed with two assists to Eli Brown and Colton Simoes. Carter Smith, player of the game in goal, stuffed two in close shot opportunities and robbed shots from the Rams’ relentless attack. Carter changed the momentum of the game. His defense held well against the Rams but when they broke through he came up big.”
Simoes had a goal and two assists, Isaiah Ervin had six goals and two assists and Eli Brown and Carter Carmichael each had a goal
Colton Simoes’ faceoff wins helped hold off the Rams attack. He won 73 percent against a formidable contender.
“This is a tough week with a game against Camden Hills tomorrow,” Simoes said. “This is a huge win against a Class A team. They dug deep and won. I’m proud of them. “
On May 28 the Moose suffered a 13-6 home loss vs. Camden Hills Regional High School.
Despite a hat trick by Ervin and Brown it just wasn’t enough to pull ahead. Simoes dominated the faceoff position with 86 percent win ratio. Brayden Drake and Clive Small joined forces to assist Brown.
“We just couldn’t finish today,” Simoes said. “When you are winning 90 percent of the faceoff offensive opportunities and could not capitalize consistently it changes the flow of the game. Camden had some good finishers and you have to give them credit for confidence on the attack.”
Brown scored three goals while Ervin had three and one assist. Simoes had three assists to go along with his 86 faceoff winning percentage. Drake added an assist.
Simoes recognized the hard work from his defense, which includes goalie Smith, on two tough opponents.
“Now we have our sights on next week to secure a playoff position,” the coach said. “This one is done, time to move on to recovery, watching film, running drills and forming a winning strategy.”
