To the editor:
Mr. Kipp, in his letter to the editor [published on] June 18, made some interesting comments. I have a couple of questions I hope he will answer for me.
He wrote, “Trump is violating our constitutional rights when he sends our military to squash protests,”
My question: If the protests are violent and the governor, mayor or whoever is in charge fails to act, and Trump feels the need to protect the public, is he justified in doing so?
Mr. Kipp also stated: “ICE’s deportation dragnet has swept up immigrants who have committed no crimes, legal residents, and even U.S. citizens. Our government employees are abducting people and asking questions later.”
My question is: If there is probable cause to detain someone and they are given the opportunity to state their case, as they are by the Customs Enforcement Removal Operations, are they actually being abducted?
Mr. Kipp also said: “Trump, ICE and the LAPD are entrusted with power. Power comes with responsibilities; it sets a moral bar for behavior. Sometimes people fail to clear that bar. And when they do, they should not expect our gratitude.”
My question is: Where should the bar be set for the demonstrators before law enforcement is allowed to act?
