CARIBOU, Maine — The Center for the Advancement of Rural Living will host its first Aging Symposium on Aug. 8 at Caribou High School. The event is designed to provide older adults, family members, caregivers and community members with practical information and resources to help individuals remain safe, healthy, and independent as they age.
The symposium will feature educational presentations and resources focused on topics that are important to older adults and their families. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn strategies for maintaining independence at home, recognizing and avoiding scams, planning for future needs and accessing community resources that support healthy aging.
As Maine continues to have one of the oldest populations in the nation, events such as the Aging Symposium provide an opportunity for community members to learn from local professionals, ask questions, and connect with organizations that serve older adults throughout Aroostook County.
Participants will receive practical information on topics such as transportation options, home safety, health and wellness, caregiving resources, fraud prevention, community programs and other avenues that can help older adults remain active, connected and independent for as long as possible.
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees will receive educational materials and information about services available in the region. A grab-and-go lunch will also be provided.
Doors will open at 9:30 a.m.
“One of the goals of this symposium is to help people stay informed, connected, and independent for as long as possible,” Thomas Jones, AmeriCorps Member with CARL, said. “We want older adults and their families to leave with practical information they can use right away.”
The symposium is part of CARL’s ongoing effort to expand and maintain programs, services and community connections that support older adults throughout Aroostook County.
Additional details, presenters and registration information will be announced as the event approaches.
