Class D boys’ squads hope to advance after playoffs
The high school basketball season has come to a close, with postseason play getting under way tonight, with the boys’ preliminary contests.
The Houlton Shiretowners are ranked No. 5 in the Heal Point standings and will meet No. 4 Orono in a rematch of last year’s Class C quarterfinal round, which the Shires won, 59-56.
The two clubs will meet at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at the Bangor Auditorium for their second showdown.
In Class D, the Katahdin Cougars earned an eighth seed in the Heal Point standings and will face No. 9 Machias in Stacyville tonight. The winner will go on to the quarterfinals at 3:35 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18 to face the top-ranked Central Aroostook Panthers.
In other playoffs, No. 4 Ashland will host No. 13 Jonesport-Beals, while No. 5 Fort Fairfield hosts No. 12 Van Buren, and No. 3 Woodland will host No. 14 Limestone. The No. 6 Easton Bears host No. 11 Bangor Christian, while two local teams go for long bus trips, as No. 2 Deer Isle-Stonington hosts No. 15 Hodgdon and No. 7 Shead will host No. 10 Southern Aroostook.
The winners of Ashland/Jonesport and Fort Fairfield/Van Buren will advance to the quarterfinal round at 2:05 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18 at the auditorium.
The winners of Woodland/Limestone and Easton/Bangor Christian will face off at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Bangor Auditorium in Class D quarterfinal action.
The winners of Deer Isle-Stonington/Hodgdon and Shead/Southern Aroostook will vie for the right to move on in the Class D tournament in quarterfinal action at 8:35 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the auditorium.
