CARIBOU and PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Center for Advancement of Rural Living announces a donation of $5,000 from MMG Insurance in Presque Isle to support the Caribou Performing Arts Center Revitalization project.

The funds will be used to bring outside performing groups to CPAC, which serves as the largest regional performing arts facility north of Bangor.

“As we look to developing and growing the region, we are proud to support the revitalization of the Caribou Performing Arts Center,” said Larry Shaw, MMG president and CEO.

“Attracting and retaining a talented workforce in Aroostook County relies on more than a career, it’s also about a community that offers a well-rounded experience, including access to art and cultural opportunities,” said Shaw.

CARL identified the need for more exposure to the performing arts in the region. All all-volunteer local non-profit, the organization seeks to fill gaps in cultural, socioeconomic, agriculture and other quality-of life issues in the area. CARL has taken the helm of the performance center project, including bringing on theater instructor and playwright Darci Faye.

Faye is the volunteer program director for the effort, part of a VISTA/AmeriCorps sponsorship. An Aroostook County native, she is known for her passion for the arts. Her group “Broadway Kids in the County,” produces plays that inspire the next generation of youth through theater performance.

CARL organizers said upcoming shows are now being booked for the new performance year, which will also mark the 30th anniversary of CPAC. The 800-plus-seat venue, which is connected to Caribou High School, has a history of hosting world-class performances, though recent years have seen the center underutilized.

Lisa Prescott, CARL board president, said, “Our organization is excited in this project as the first of many to expand the cultural experience for the citizens of Aroostook County. This year we hope to bring back some performers that performed in years past as a tribute to the Center as well as some new, exciting acts. We hope that there will be something for all ages to attend with the upcoming lineup.”

Those who are interested in providing support or who want to be part of the revitalization effort should contact Faye at darci.faye@maine.edu.
