TOPS ME 233, Houlton
By Lois Downing

Take Off Pounds Sensibly 233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its April 18 meeting.
Eighteen ladies were in attendance. Donna Parent, absent for several weeks because of an injury, was present and welcomed back. Judy Jameson became a new member.
Loser of the week was Juanita Warman with Melva Folsom as runner-up.
Brenda Lacostic was awarded the mystery gift; 50/50 was Kay Grass winner and the skinny dish was held over.
Joyce Estey, leader, welcomed everyone and introduced Judy to everyone.
A thank you note was read from Donna. Denise Kinney notified the ladies that KOPS Angel and Chapter Angel will be voted on next week. She told everyone that the contest is going good and that everyone should bring in a gift for the basket, one for KOPS and one for TOPS.
Reports were given by Joanne Scott and Vicki Little. Joyce brought up the subject of t-shirts. She will look into it and let the ladies know when she finds out.
Vicki Little and Anita Nason had charge of the program and their topic was the shape of a person, pear or apple. One of them was a pear and one was an apple. They had been to a meeting in Bangor. High cholesterol was also a topic. There are steps to lower cholesterol; know your numbers, eat fish twice a week, exercise and no smoking are some of the ways.
Some of the ladies had birthdays. Aileen Smith turned 80 on April 17 and Gerry McAfee and Juanita Warman also had a birthday and they were sung “Happy Birthday” to all when they stood before the group.
Some of the ladies will be attending SRD in Bangor May 30-31. More plans on this later.
The next meeting will be April 25. If you wish more information about the chapter, call Charlotte Marley at 757-8483 or Betty Ivey at 532-9653.
Meetings start at 9 o’clock after weigh-in at 8-8:45 a.m.
Everyone is welcome.

Ricker Rumblings
By Lois Downing

Hi there everyone! Nice day here and that’s all I’ll say about the weather.
Janet Barker, a friend and school teacher, has left for Las Vegas, Nevada to be with her one of her daughters, who is facing surgery. Good health and good traveling, Janet.
Michael and Shannon MacDonald of East Rochester, N.H., with their boys Elijah, Isaiah, and Tobias, were visiting their grandmother, Marion Hogan, last week.
It was a busy day on Thursday last week in the community room when the Lolipop Day visited Ricker Plaza. They were guests of their grandmother, Janice McCarthy, who lives at Ricker. The children were Vicki Porter, Lindzi Nelson, Sierra Savoy, Amelia Flewelling, Lexi Phillips and Nick Austin. Other ladies were Carmen Chasse, Doris Hogan, Helen Brewer, Priscilla Brownlow, Nancee Campbell and Lois Downing, Nancee performed “The chicken who laid an egg.” There were songs, refreshments and altogether it was a nice morning.
Elinor Schenk has returned from the hospital where she spent a few days.
We are planning a potluck dinner in the community room on Monday. Since there are no Meals on Wheels, we are celebrating Patriot’s Day.
Elinor Schenk and her daughter Jeri Smith attended in Bangor a Christian women’s retreat, sponsored by the Houlton Military Baptist Church. I’m told 30 churches were represented. They stayed at Day’s Inn in Bangor night. Connie Barry was accompanied by two of her daughters. The event was held at the Spectacular Events Center. A style show was the entertainment and a very nice time was had by all.
Irene, manager of the Meals on Wheels, and who heads up the “A Matter of Balance” was excited the other day. She had five ladies receiving certificates for taking the course. Congratulations on the five ladies. Good work.
Bingo has been cancelled for the summer. We will try starting up again in the fall.
Do you notice how a person’s face lights up when you pay him/her a compliment? Try it and see for yourself!
Norma Bates had a birthday recently and had many callers from family and friends. “Happy Birthday” friend and many of them.
My thought for the day: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27)
Have a safe and good week.

This has been a winter slow to dissipate in the upper portion of northern Maine. Robins appeared two weeks ago to a bleak, snowy scene, but are faring more normally at present. Welcome, Spring!
Thanks to the music making of the foursome of Ivan Clark, his wife Jeanne, Stan Hinkley and Brenda Clark, everyone sings. The men sing and play guitars, both country and gospel songs.
Those present included: Annie and Fred Atkinson, Jeanne and Dean McKenney, Mary Dickinson, Bonita Staples, Terese Albert, June Gagnon, Margaret Duffy, Sam Guiggey, Sandra Qualey, Patricia Violette, Joyce O’Hara, Linniea Perry, Evelyn McDonald, guest Rose Bushey, Ethel Morgan, Mary Lawler, Donna Grass, Esther Grenier and Gloria Noyes.
