Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met at the Aroostook Health Center on Tuesday, June 9, at 6:30 a.m.
Rena Kearney and Dean Larrabee were inducted into the club as new members by Presque Isle Rotarian Nancy Fletcher. Rena taught school at Fort Street Elementary School for over 42 years. Dean and his wife have moved back to Mars Hill after spending 40 years in Herman working for S.W. Cole.
The special speaker was Dr. Natania Piper, a urologist with Pines Health Services. She spoke to the group about enlarged prostate and its signs. Men over the age of 50 should be checked yearly, as there are medications that can help. Ignoring the signs can lead to damage of other organs, such as the bladder and kidneys. An enlarged prostate is not typically cancerous, but around 70 percent of men will require surgery for an enlarged prostate in their lifetime. Statistically, Maine is on par with the rest of the United States with cases of enlarged prostate, but Maine does have a high rate of bladder cancer.
