The Caribou girls basketball team earned the upset of the season, thus far, when the Vikings defeated previously-unbeaten Mount Desert Island 30-29 Monday.     Weather forced the postponement of last Wednesday’s Fort Kent vs. Limestone-MSSM girls contest. That game instead will be played tonight at 6 p.m. in Limestone.
The Caribou boys broke a four-game losing streak with a 42-29 victory over MDI Monday. The Limestone-MSSM boys, on the other hand, are in the midst of a seven-game losing streak after two more defeats last week.
The following is a recap of games played through Monday, Dec. 28.
Caribou girls 30, MDI 29 — At Caribou, the Vikings were held without a field goal in the fourth quarter, but fortunately the team’s defense – coupled with a sizeable third quarter lead – was enough to hang on against Mount Desert Island.
“The difference in the game was our defense,” Caribou coach Bill Schofield said. “We focused on [MDI’s Megan] Phelps wherever she was and forced her to pass the ball instead of shoot. This was a very important win for us as they [MDI] were undefeated and second in the Heal Points. This win will go a long way as we only play them once. So every time they win a game, we will benefit.”
Only three Caribou players scored points in the game. Jenna Selander led the way with 16 points, while Dayna Michaud added eight and Jamie Martin, six.
For MDI, Phelps, despite the constant Caribou pressure, managed 13 points, while Sara Carroll added seven.
Caribou led 10-5, 14-10 and 27-18 at the quarter breaks.
Washburn girls 51, Easton 28 — At Easton Dec. 22, Washburn’s Rebecca Campbell single-handedly beat Easton as the junior dropped 31 points to lead the Beavers to victory. Other Washburn scorers were Sarah Sjoberg, eight; Meghan Saucier and Rayah Saucier, both four; and Jordan Chandler and Kristi Spencer, both two.
Halvorson paced Easton with eight points, while Hammond added six; Babineau and Desmond, both five; Trask, three; and Plourde, one.
Washburn led 20-5, 28-13 and 34-22 at the quarter breaks.
Caribou boys 42, MDI 29 – At Caribou Monday, Matt Till scored 20 points and Cameron Anderson added 11 more as Caribou topped Mount Desert Island in a low-scoring contest. The win improved the Vikings’ record to 3-4 entering today’s game in Bangor against John Bapst.
Chris Nadeau grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for Caribou.
Dennis O’Neil led the Trojans, who scored just 10 points in the first half and 14 through three quarters, with 11 points.
Madawaska boys 79, Limestone-MSSM 30 – At Madawaska Monday, Deejay Gendreau outscored the visiting Eagles all by himself, netting 35 points in the Owls’ decisive victory.
Matt Deschenes dished out nine assists for Madawaska, while Jon Lee posted nine points.
Michael Allen led the Eagles, who fell to 1-8 on the season, with 12 points, while Josh Forsman and Aaron St. Pierre had eight and six points, respectively.
Van Buren boys 31, Limestone-MSSM 30 –  At Limestone last Tuesday, the Crusaders were able to secure their first victory of the season thanks to the offensive performance of Derrick Rossignol, who totalled 18 points to lead all scorers.
The Eagles, who fell to 1-7, were led by Dylan Caldwell’s eight points, with Allen following with seven.
