It was Saturday, the 22nd of May, while sitting on the porch of the Houlton golf course clubhouse, with a soft breeze rippling through the pines, the air so clear and clean, I thought of once yearning for the bustle of Boston, the night life of New York, the sands of Miami Beach and San Diego, the lure of Waikiki Beach in Hawaii, the quiet of the Mohave Desert, the craze of the Las Vegas casinos, then I realized their no better spot in the world I would rather be on a warm spring day than where I am at the moment. I hope you all can find that moment of contentment.
There are many interesting groups that tee off on a regular basis at Houlton Community Course. They include the Thursday foursome of Bob Anderson, who has the uncanny ability to make a 10-foot putt with a bunch of carry over skins on the line. Dick York, whose smooth practice swing sometimes changes when the ball is on the tee, proving golf is more mental than physical. David Moore, who is a very helpful partner, as his cell phone seems to ring during his opponent’s backswing. And, Paul Adams, whose powerful drives occasionally land in the middle of the fairway, and occasionally in the middle of Nickerson Lake.
Then there is Bert Daniels, Jerry Adams, Art Nickels and Frank Dunn, who swings as if sitting in a Lazy Boy recliner.
Wednesday features the Blitz groups. These guys are tough — all low handicappers — led by Jerry York, Gary Severson, Fred Putnam, Wally Peabody, Dave Edgar, Greg Palmer, Mark Anderson, Sean Doloman, Dennis Wright and Tony Marino, whose game is a mystery. How can he make four Birdies in nine holes and still shoot 50?
Dave Grant, Wayne Quint, Vaughn Putnam, Malcolm Mersereau, who thinking of foursomes, calls to mind our semi-monthly poker games where twice in the last month Malcolm has held four of a kind against my full house.
There are many more groups we will be reporting on this season and some interesting and almost factual happenings.
