August Festival plans under way

Plans for this year’s August Festival are well under way and folks are gearing up for a great time. Brochures will be out soon and the activities will also be listed in the August edition of the “County Crossroads.”
Friday will feature the baby and bike parade, children’s Plinko, an outdoor theater (“Gnomeo and Juliet”), food booths, Aroostook County Bluegrass and the alumni banquet.

MEMBERS OF THE WASHBURN BAND entertained parade-goers during last year’s August Festival. Plans are well under way for this year’s festivities which will include a chicken barbecue, fireworks display, and contests for kids.
Saturday will start with a big breakfast, and feature the arts and crafts show, the big parade, the Historical Society Museum will be open, the SCA Medieval Troop, the children‘s carnival, Randy Michaud, mini-tractor rides, car, truck, tractor and motorcycle show, and a chicken barbecue. Also on Saturday will be horse-drawn wagon rides, soccer games, rubber ducky race, baked bean supper, Sound Friendship and an enlarged fireworks show.
Sunday will feature a kayak and canoe race, brunch, antique tractor pulls and a gospel concert. The Historical Society Museum will also be open for tours.
This is the 150th anniversary of the town’s founding, so come on out and help celebrate this milestone!
Washburn pageants planned
There will be Washburn pageants held Saturday, Aug. 13. The Little Miss and Pre-Teen Miss Washburn Pageant will be held at 2 p.m. at the high school. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased from any contestant.
The Junior Miss, Teen Miss and Miss Washburn pageant will be held that evening. Tickets will be $7 and are available from any contestant.
There will be meetings this Thursday, July 21 at the high school from 3-4:30 p.m. for interested contestants and parents in grades 1-5 for the Little and Pre-Teen pageant and from 5:30-7 p.m. for all interested contestants and parents in grades 6-13 (first year in college). Salmon Brook Historical Society
The Salmon Brook Historical Society will be holding its next meeting Thursday, Aug. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Washburn Civic Center. A potluck supper will be followed by a business meeting. Please bring a service setting and either a main dish, dessert or rolls.
New officers for the 2011-12 year are President, Gary Cole; Vice President, Bill White; Secretary/Treasurer, Dennis Harris; and new board member, Anita Dickinson. For more information about the group or the museums, contact Harris at 455-8279.
The Museums of the Salmon Brook Historical Society will be open for tours Sunday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. and Wednesday mornings from 8-11 a.m. For tours at other times, please call 455-8279 or 455-4723 a few days in advance to make arrangements.
