UCU gifts flying high at university

PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle hosted a special reception for University Credit Union in appreciation of a generous donation which has helped the campus complete a beautification project. The event, which was free and open to the public, was held on Monday, Dec. 3, at 4 p.m. in the Campus Center’s Alumni Room.

A gift from UCU officials this fall has allowed the University to install new light pole and entryway banners throughout campus and update many of the flags displayed in its International Circle of Flags, located near Wieden Hall. Two of the larger banners now on display welcome campus and community members to Preble Hall, the campus administration building — which is one of the first buildings people visit when they come to campus — and the Campus Center, which serves as the institution’s major hub for student activities, community events and cultural programs.
Oneof UMPI President Linda Schott’s premier initiatives after coming on board in July was to spruce up the campus and ensure it was as welcoming as possible to residents, visitors and prospective students. Many colleges and universities use banners throughout campus to send that very message. The gift from UCU enabled the university to purchase dozens of banners, which are decked out in the school’s colors — blue and gold — and are visible along campus walkways, the main driveway and on Presque Isle’s Main Street. These colors were designed by Dick Harrison, UMPI’s coordinator of graphic design and photography.
“We are delighted to have these bright, new additions thoughtfully placed throughout the University grounds and to be able to showcase our UMPI pride to everyone who steps onto campus,” Schott said. “We thanked UCU officials in person for helping us to make this beautification project happen.”
