100 Years Ago – Aug.8, 1917
Bread — Representatives of 250 New England hotels met in Boston last week and voted to discontinue the service of white bread for one week, as a means of saving flour and encouraging the use of corn, rye and other breads. Resolutions to make Tuesday a beefless day and to inaugurate systematical measures to curtail consumption of wheat bread, butter, sugar and young animal meat were adopted last week by the Food Administration’s Hotel and Restaurant Committee, whose membership includes the proprietors of many of the country’s leading hotels and restaurants.
Appointed — Guy C. Porter has been appointed by Gov. Milliken to the International Farm Congress.
75 Years Ago – Aug. 6, 1942
Back from trip — Miss Helen Ruth Mullen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Norman Mullen, returned recently from Chicago, Ill., where she attended the National Sorority Convention held there in mid-June. Miss Mullen was a delegate from the Delta Delta Delta Sorority, of which she is a member at the University of Maine, Orono.
New position — Miss Phyllis Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Anderson, Upper Military Street, has accepted a position in the office of the the F. A. Peabody Insurance Company, Market Square.
50 Years Ago – Aug. 9 , 1967
Accepted — Lloyd Fitzgerald, who is serving with the Forestry Department at Fredericton, and a former resident of Houlton, has recently had three of his outdoor life sketches accepted by the Wildlife Review, a magazine published at Victoria, B. C..
Tour — Cub Scout Pack 156 of Houlton was in Limestone Saturday to visit Loring AFB. The tour included an inspection of the bombers and missiles, a demonstration of the dogs used for patrol and guard duty, a film of the Strategic Air Command, showing a day in the life of a flier.
25 Years Ago – Aug. 5, 1992
Celebrate birthday — Hillus Ingraham of Houlton was the guest of honor at a birthday party at Madigan Estates Nursing Home. He was 90. Hostesses for the party were Gennette Ingraham Hawley, Marie Jenkins and Barbara and Kim Edwards.
Elected — Edward L. Hennessey, Jr., president of Machias Savings Bank in Machias, has been elected 1992-1993 chairman of the Maine Association of Community Banks. He succeeds John A. Durham, president of Franklin Savings Bank. P. James Dowe, Jr., president of Bath Savings Institution, was named association vice chairman.
