FORT KENT, Maine – The trustees of the Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation are pleased to announce the awarding of a scholarship for $2,000 to Breanna Ouellette of Madawaska. Ouellette is a junior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business management at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, where she maintains a high grade point average.
Megan Ogden, director of programming and member services of the Maine Bankers Association, made the presentation to Ouellette on April 4 on the UMFK campus with family members and UMFK faculty and staff.
Ouellette is a 2023 graduate of Madawaska Middle/High School and currently works as a dietary aid (non-direct care employee) at St. Joseph’s Memory Care in Frenchville and seasonal work for the Madawaska Recreation Department. As a first-generation student, she is the first in her family to pursue a four-year bachelor’s degree.
The Higher Education Assistance Foundation was founded in the 1950s by a group of banks, businesses, community organizations and individuals. Now administered by the Maine Bankers Association, the Foundation annually awards scholarships to students with a business-related major at select Maine colleges to Maine high school graduates. It has awarded more than $440,000 since 1990. This year, to reflect the increased cost of education, the scholarship has been increased from $1,200 to $2,000 per award. The students receiving scholarships were selected by their departments on the basis of their academic excellence.
MeHEAF has given 35 scholarships to UMFK students to date. UMFK also has a plaque with each student’s name and year awarded, which the University displays in the Grindle conference room, located in Cyr Hall.
