Aroostook County was selected Maine County of 2nd Quarter, 2025 for its community service by Spirit of America Foundation’s Maine Chapter.
Aroostook County over many years has helped the cause of community service by organizing especially lovely ceremonies honoring its municipalities’ winners of the Spirit of America Foundation Tribute for outstanding volunteerism. The events have given county, state and local representatives an opportunity to recognize the exceptional volunteers of Aroostook. Aroostook’s ceremonies have given many volunteers across the county an opportunity to connect and foster future collaboration. Winners have said they “enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere,” and that “the most enjoyable part was meeting people and talking with folks we had never met.”
Aroostook observed 2025 County Officials Appreciation Month (April) by honoring its Emergency Management Agency team at the April county commissioners meeting. Peter Rogers, director of the Maine Emergency Management Agency, was present and commended the team for its work providing essential services to such a vast geographic area, creating partnerships with local communities and internationally and creating and offering training in-house to alleviate traveling downstate, among other things. The Aroostook EMA team is an asset to Aroostook and all other counties.
The County is very creative in other ways. It proposed Fire Prevention Month (October) be used to recognize all of Aroostook’s volunteer firefighters and shared the idea with Spirit of America in hopes of inspiring other Maine Counties to recognize firefighters that month too.
