102 Years Ago – August 12, 1915

New project — At a meeting of the Woman’s Hospital Aid, it was announced that the net proceeds of the Hospital Bazaar were $483.43. This amount the Society voted to make up to $500 by adding a sum from the treasury, to be used for the purpose of adding large piazza to the hospital and the following committee of citizens, Hospital trustees and members of the Aid, was appointed to confer with the physicians and arrange for the carrying out of the project: C. F. Daggett, Sidney Graves, Harry R. Pipes, Mrs. D. A. Stevens, Mrs. C. F. Parsons, and Mrs. Frank Kilburn.

New sidewalk — A fine granolithic sidewalk was laid in front of the Perry Block on Main Street. L. M. Freese was in charge of the work. A new walk had also been finished in front of L. S. Bean’s garage.

75 Years Ago – August 6, 1942

New executive officer — On Saturday, July 25, 1942, Lt. Colonel Robert W. Owen took over the Base Executive Officer’s position left vacant by Lt. Col. Wm. L. Plummer. He was a 1st Lt. in World War 1 in the Air Corps as a pilot and had been an  officer of the 116th Observation Squadron, Washington National Guard since 1924. In 1940, he was called by the President for active duty due to the national emergency.

Lions and Rotarians entertain Marine Officers — Presque Isle Lions and Rotary Clubs held a joint meeting as sponsors of the Naval Aviation Cadet Selection Group who were in attendance for the purpose of explaining the drive for recruits for The Marine Aviation Week Program.

50 Years Ago – August 9, 1967

Goldsmith appointed — Larry Goldsmith of Presque Isle, a member of the Presque Isle Lions Club, had been appointed district deputy governor of the Northern Region of Lions District 41-0. The appointment was made by District Governor Don MacLeod of Bar Harbor, ME.

Hathaway dined by Democrats — After a press conference, in which Cong. William D. Hathaway expressed continued confidence in the success of the Federal Dickey-Lincoln hydroelectric effort, disclosed his opinion that the President was asking for a 10 percent tax surcharge and expecting in the neighborhood of 6 percent, and gave his impression that his vote against the flag desecration bill had helped his public image, he was honored at a banquet in the Northeastland Hotel.

25 Years Ago – August 5, 1992

KFC won Houlton tourney — Kentucky Fried Chicken of Presque Isle won the Houlton Softball Tournament, going undefeated in four games. The KFC squad, which competed in the men’s softball league, defeated the Houlton Travelers, 11-6, for the championship. Travelers came out of the losers’ bracket to make the finals. In the championship game, KFC used two hits each from Jeff Steffenson, Russell Clark, Pat Buckley, Dave DeMerchant and John Buckley. In the semifinals, KFC used four hits from Bob Buckley, three hits each from Tom Richards, Stephenson, Clark, DeMerchant and John Buckley to rally past the Travelers 18-7.

Mapleton honor — Llewellyn Jones, of Mapleton, received the Boston Post Cane for being the town’s oldest resident from town manager Duncan Beaton. Jones, a former Mapleton school board member, born in 1894, celebrated his 98th birthday on July 27.
