Monson Pond group makes progress on watershed restoration

Friends of Monson Pond held its annual meeting on Oct. 30, 2025, highlighting major progress in ongoing efforts to restore the health of Monson Pond and announcing the launch of its 2026 membership and fundraising campaign.

During the meeting, members received updates on two major initiatives: the finalized 2023 Monson Pond Watershed Survey and the ongoing development of the Monson Pond Watershed-based Management Plan.

Presentations were provided by Jennifer Jespersen of Ecological Instincts, project consultant, and Kirsten Thompson of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, project coordinator. Both shared encouraging details about the scientific findings and the steps being taken to address long-term water quality concerns.

Monson Pond has been designated by the Maine DEP as an “Impaired” water body, with challenges that include low water clarity, elevated phosphorus and chlorophyll a levels, and reduced oxygen levels. The management plan outlines a 10-year strategy to restore the pond’s ecological health, improve water quality and protect the watershed for future generations.

“A healthy Monson Pond is essential to our community,” said Steve Towle, Friends of Monson Pond president. “It supports Fort Fairfield’s backup water supply, provides recreational opportunities for local families and visitors, and sustains important wildlife habitat. Our goal is to ensure this resource remains vibrant and protected.”

The friends group plays a key role as a community-based organization connecting residents with resources, expertise and funding opportunities to support watershed protection. Thanks to generous community support, it has fully funded its current planning grant. The organization is now working to build financial reserves in preparation for the 2027 implementation grant, which will fund on-the-ground restoration projects.

To continue this momentum, Friends is launching its 2026 membership drive. Community members are invited to join or renew their membership for $25 and to consider making an additional tax-deductible donation to support ongoing restoration efforts.

“Community involvement is essential,” said Dan Foster, vice president. “Every membership and every donation strengthens our ability to protect Monson Pond.”

“We’re grateful for the support we’ve received so far,” added Deb Dall, Treasurer. “Together, we can restore Monson Pond and safeguard its future.”
