More than 18 floats and non-float entries put on in a good effort to pull off yet another successful parade. With this year’s theme focused on a Victorian Christmas, many of the participants made sure their entries were well lit and ready to ride. Christmas music filled the air from one float, bringing onlookers one step closer to being in the festive spirit.
“I think the crowd was much bigger,” commented Lori Weston, executive director for the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce. “In spite of the cold weather, it did hinder some of the entries because of smaller children, but it was an extraordinary effort by everybody involved.”
North Street had its fair share of viewers, but it was Market Square that became packed with eager onlookers. Houlton’s Christmas tree was erected in the middle of the Square where everyone crowded in to watch as Santa Claus did the honors of officially lighting the tree.
“The crowd was just awesome,” said Weston. “It was incredible.”
Santa’s sleigh was brought into town courtesy of Houlton Power Sports. The Jolly Old Elf made his way through the crowd, to the tree and then he joined his “good friend” Galen Wilde for hot chocolate and cookies. Children were also treated to an opportunity to share their “secret wishes” with Mr. Claus.
“Galen (of Shiretown Stamp and Coins) always opens his door to let the children in to see Santa,” explained Weston. “That’s the fun for him and Galen was really impressed with the number of families coming in to visit.”
Float entries were also subjected to judging, but not without its perks. Winners were awarded cash prizes for their efforts. First place in the float category was given to the Maine Fire Prevention Services, along with a $150 prize; second place was awarded to Expresso Printing Inc. with a $75 prize; and third place of $50 was given to Houlton Power Sports. Non-float winners included: first place, Hodgdon Fire Department, $100; second place, North Country Cruisers ( Mike Marshall), $75; and third place, North Country Cruisers (Grinch), $50. Non-vehicle winners were: first place, Cameron Clark (unicycle), $50; and second place, Rod and Rachel Williams (Mary and Joseph), $25.
The annual light parade also kicks off other festive events being sponsored by the Chamber and its members.
The business window decorating contests has categories: best overall window display; best exterior display and best combination of all. Trophies will be awarded for each category with a grand prize trophy awarded. The trophy will be displayed at the winning location until the next year when the trophy will travel to the next winning location. Plaques will be added to the trophy as it travels from winning location to winning location.
Judging will take place on Dec. 7, 8 and 9 and winners will be announced on Dec. 10.
A Gingerbread House Building Contest is also another first for the Chamber. The Chamber staff will sell building permits for $1 to hopeful designers.
Another highlight to this year’s festivities is going to be the Christmas Home Decorating Contest. This event will feature area residents who take the time to decorate their home each year. The Home decorating contest will recognize those talents and hopefully encourage folks who have always thought about decorating to actually get on board and do it.
There are six categories: religious (best display with a religious theme); nostalgic (most old-fashioned, best childhood memories); Clark Griswold (excessive use of outdoor lighting or decorations); Anything Goes; Martha Stewart Would Be Proud (if she is – you win); and Charlie Browniest (Snoopy won first prize … this category is for the best decoration on a doghouse, tool shed, barn or outhouse … anything but your home). One home will be judged the best overall (regardless of category) for a grand prize.
“Folks who enter will be listed in media announcements so that the entire community can enjoy the labors of those participating,” said Weston. “Those wishing to participate must complete an entry form that is available at the Chamber office or online at www.greaterhoulton.com.”
Entries must be received no later than Dec. 3 in order to be on the Judges’ list. Judging will occur on Dec. 7, 8 and 9. Homes will be judged based on curbside appeal only. Judges will not enter the property. Prizes will be awarded in all six categories.
