Houlton kids do well at Elks annual state soccer shoot

The Maine Elks Association held its annual State Soccer Shoot at the Augusta Elks Lodge on Oct. 16, which is one of the most popular youth activities sponsored by the fraternal organization.
There are two competitions. A five-goal contest and a grid-goal contest.
    The five-goal contest is designed for the Under 8 and Under 10 age groups. This contest consists of a series of five goals. The contestants are given three shots at each goal. Points are awarded for each successful shot — one point for successful tally at 48-inch goal; two points for successful marker at 40-inch goal; three points at the 34-inch goal; four points at the 26-inch goal and five points for the 17-inch goal.
The grid goal competition  is designed for the  Under 12 and Under 14 groups. This competition consists of a grid across a full size soccer goal. Points are awarded for various areas of the 24-foot goal. Points range from one point in the center, to as many as five points in the top corners. The contest consists of 15 shots from a distance of 36 feet from the goal.
Winners are determined by their total score, with the highest score being declared the winner.
The top scorers in each class from the Maine contest will advance to the Regional Soccer Shoot to be held on Nov. 4-6 at the CNY Family Sports Centre in Syracuse, N.Y,.
Results for the Under 8 boys: First, Justin Gould, Sanford; second, Collin Moody, Houlton and third, Brady Corson, Lewiston; Under 8 girls: first, Jasmine Vosburg, Augusta; second, Alamea McCarthy, Brunswick and third, Abby Fitzpatrick, Houlton; Under 10 boys: first, Jarret Fournier, Houlton; second,  Alex Hopper, Augusta and third, Brandon Star, Rockland; Under 10 girls: first, Kayla Donlin, Rockland; second, Abbie Worthley, Houlton and third, Tori Rose Grasse, Augusta; Under 12 boys: first, Spenser Grasse, Augusta,; second, Cole Winslow, Houlton and third,  Eric Sousa, Wells; and Under 14 boys: first,  Dillon Carmichael, Houlton and second, Sam Wilkinson, Augusta.
