Four council seats on Nov. ballot

CARIBOU, Maine — Caribou citizens will elect four new councilors this November to the seven-person board, as well as two members of the RSU 39 School Board and one new member of the Jefferson Cary Board — but Caribou City Clerk Jayne Farrin has reported that not enough individuals have taken out nomination papers to fill all the vacancies.
Three of the council vacancies are regularly occurring with terms are expiring for councilors Philip McDonough II, Shane McDougall and Mayor Gary Aiken.
Former councilor David Genthner, Sr. recently announced his resignation on Aug. 11 due to a move south, and whoever is elected to the remainder of his term will serve until Dec. 31 of 2015.
Nomination papers for those interested in being on the November ballot are due back to the city clerk’s office by 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, and must have signatures from 25 registered Caribou voters. As of Tuesday morning, Farrin hadn’t received any returned nomination papers.
“If people want to make a difference and get involved in their community, this is a way of doing it,” she said.
