Winter weather causes delays and closures in Presque Isle area

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — With the arrival of harsh winter weather, local schools operated on two-hour delays and even closures on Friday, Feb. 18.

The National Weather Service in Caribou expired its winter weather advisory at noon, but warned of blowing snow that could create whiteout conditions and slick roads over the next several hours.

“Things should be getting back to normal later this evening,” said Matt Strauser of the National Weather Service. “It will be a cold night tonight, dropping below zero again.”

The Presque Isle Police Department saw a small uptick in crashes as a result of this weather system. The department estimates that the plows will have cleaned up the roads by noon, but recommend allowing an extra hour after to be safe.

Several schools have been affected by the weather. Presque Isle, Fort Fairfield, Washburn, Easton and Central Aroostook have all been on a two-hour delay schedule Friday. The University of Maine at Presque Isle began its day on a two-hour delay, but later canceled classes in PI and at the Houlton center.
