1987: Caribou Fine Arts Center officially opens

Santa visited youngsters at the Chamber of Commerce including 4-year-old Nicole DeMerchant, daughter of Brenda and Donald DeMerchant of Caribou, who was  willing to recite her wish list.

100 Years Ago-Dec. 5, 1912

Washburn gatherings — Among the family gatherings on Thanksgiving Day were the Wilder family at V. E. Wilder’s; the Duncan families at William Duncan’s; the Umphrey families at I. B. Umphrey’s. Also, Rev. and Mrs. H. G. Clark of Presque Isle and Rev. and Mrs. Thompson of Perham were guests on Thanksgiving Day of Mrs. C. C. Koch.

Revival meetings — A series of revival meetings will begin in the Opera House on Sunday next, Dec. 8, under the auspices of the Holiness Association. The public is cordially invited to attend.

75 Years Ago-Dec. 9, 1937

CHS basketball underway — Coach Nathan Epstein said recently that both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at Caribou High School will give a good account of themselves before season’s end. The boys’ team is made up of Omer Henderson, Bertis Pratt, Cecil Lister, Richard Habeeb and Wilson Hitchcock. Girls’ team members are Eva Shorey, Patricia Gregory, Francis Ginn, Gertrude Tozier, Margaret Corey and Ruth Thibodeau.

At the movies — The Paramount theater in Fort Fairfield is featuring the following movies: “Double Wedding” with William Powell and Myrna Loy; “That Certain Women” with Bette Davis and Henry Fonda; and “The Perfect Specimen” starring Errol Flynn and Joan Blondell.

50 Years Ago-Dec. 6, 1962

Tough on tickets — The Caribou Police are ready to “off the kid gloves” in the matter of delinquent parking meter fees and the 1,500 to 2,000 parking tickets currently outstanding, reported Chief John Doak. His department has finally started to haul violators into court as “the days of allowing car owners to ignore warning are over.” The Caribou fine for “overparking” is 50 cents and tickets are placed on cars when meters run out.

Junior city government — Appointments of this year’s government body at the Caribou Youth Center is complete with selection of the following teenagers for Junior City Government: Jr. City Manager, Jack Woods; Jr. City Recorder, Brenda Brewer; Jr. City Treasurer, Sybil Jaeger; Chairman Jr. City Council, Greg Jaeger; and Jr. City Council members Betty Duley, Conrad Beaulieu, Steve Brown, Conrad Cyr and Jackie Corey.

25 Years Ago-Dec. 9, 1987

Arts Center opening — The Caribou Fine Arts Center officially opens Jan. 3 with two free performances. The center’s grand opening presentation will feature The New England New Vaudeville Review composed of a ragtime piano player, dancers, a unicyclist, mime, jugglers and skits. Also, Carol White of Caribou, along with other members of the Choral Society, will perform under the direction of Dan Ladner.

Playing the market — The recent stock market crash on Oct. 19 will long be remembered by Elizabeth Moulton’s students at Connor Consolidated School. Though only playing The Stock Market Game, a simulation teaching activity, her pupils lost thousands of dollars of their investment in common stocks.
